From: Craig Collins – SMMS Athletic Director
I am looking forward to an exciting and fun fall season with our students/athletes. We will be offering intramural sports for middle school athletes. I am also looking forward to seeing the athletes outdoors with the teams and helping students/athletes improve themselves.
I believe in the concept of the student-athlete and believe school comes first. All students must understand that grades need to be a priority and the athletes need to comply with all SMMS eligibility policies. Also, students should feel free to talk to me, teachers, or their coaches if they need some help with schoolwork. I also believe family takes priority over sports. While we expect athletes to attend all team events I also understand there are family commitments that may need to come first. Please let your coaches as far in advance as possible if there is a potential conflict.
This will be an interesting season given the situation with COVID. We will make safety the number one priority. Masks will be worn and we will maintain social distancing any time athletes are not exercising. While exercising, masks are optional. Students may wear them if they choose, there will be no mask shaming, and students will be free to wear one. The morning health screening that all students should be doing is very important. If students are not well or have any of the COVID symptoms on the daily health screening (last page of this document), they should not come to school. Students will be asked to review the screening checklist for themselves at the start of practice to make sure nothing has changed since coming to school and privately notify the coach if they have symptoms. Safety is priority #1 and being the best students we can be while making friends is a close priority #2! Fun is our first team goal and getting in shape and hopefully preparing for future athletic opportunities come next!
As for the schedule, the typical weekly schedule will be as follows:
Mondays: Cohort A 2:30-4:00
Tuesdays: Cohort A 2:30-4:00
Wednesdays: Cohort B 2:30-4:00
Thursdays: Cohort B 2:30-4:00
Friday, Saturdays, & Sundays: No formal practices.
The season will start Monday, September 28th, and will run until Thursday, October 29th.
No School – No Practice! There will be no indoor practices and rain will likely cancel practice. The season is pushed back due to the crazy start of school. Be prepared for cooler weather, especially in late October! Dress appropriately.
