The bus drivers of RSU#73 were recently trained in a new program called ‘Peaceful Buses’ through the Franklin County Children’s Task Force.

The concept of Peaceful Bus is to teach and train the children that a peaceful bus is a safe bus! Class room training was also done to show students the link between bus and class room. Students who have a peaceful bus ride come to school ready to learn!

The bus drivers work with their students each week on the bus rules, and reports to the transportation staff each week whether they have had a peaceful bus or not. There are bus boards in each of the Elementary schools and a challenge each week to see which buses are Peaceful Buses! The students love to watch their bus climb it’s way to the top of the board and to check and see if their bus has been successful in having a peaceful, safe bus.

Some of the main goals of the Peaceful Bus program is to decrease the amount of inappropriate behavior on the school bus, decrease the amount of bullying, and increase the sense of responsibility for students for what happens on the bus.

Another goal is to develop a supportive and cooperative relationship between the school and the transportation department, all working together for our students.

Our winner for the district in February was Polly Given! Congratulations Polly to you and your students on having a safe, peaceful bus! Thank you to all of our drivers district wide for striving to have a peaceful bus and keeping our students safe.

CALLING ALL PARENTS!
Join our next PTO meeting on Tuesday, January 29th at 6:00pm in the Livermore Elementary School cafeteria. We would like your input as we plan our next school event, Read Across America! Bring your ideas! This year’s theme is “Grab your hat and read with the Cat”

You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild,
To pick up a book and read with a child.
You’re never too busy, too cool, or too hot,
To pick up a book and share what you’ve got.

In schools and communities,
Let’s gather around,
Let’s pick up a book,
Let’s pass it around.

There are kids all around you,
Kids who will need
Someone to hug,
Someone to read.

Come join us March 2nd
Your own special way
And make this America’s
Read to Kids Day.

College Courses Offered – Enroll Now!

The RSU 73 SPRUCE MOUNTAIN Adult and Community Education Program is pleased to announce that two Central Maine Community College (CMCC) classes will be offered locally in Jay and Livermore Falls in the spring of 2013. Beginning January 17, and running for 15 weeks, US History since 1865 will be offered at Spruce Mountain North Campus from 5:30 pm to 8:25 pm. College Writing will be offered from 6 pm to 8:55 pm at Spruce Mountain South Campus also beginning on Thursday, January 17 and running for 15 weeks. Classes are open to both high school juniors and seniors and residents of this community; tuition assistance is available to all qualified RSU 73 high school students. High school students who are interested in getting a head start on their college degree should contact their guidance counselor. Adult community members can also call Spruce Mountain Adult Education at 897-6384 to request assistance. All interested students and adults are invited to join us for a CMCC Information and Registration night on December 6th from 5 pm – 7 pm at Spruce Mountain Adult & Community Education, 13 Community Drive, Jay, Maine.

An ACCUPLACER assessment is required prior to enrollment. Franklin County CMCC student Services Representative Randy Berry will be administering this college test at both Spruce Mountain High Schools in the near future. For more information about this program or to register, please contact Randy at 207-740-0112 or rberry@cmcc.edu, or visit the CMCC website at WWW.CMCC.edu.

The Franklin County Community College Network, (FCCCN) which includes the schools of Spruce Mountain, Mt. Blue, Mt. Abram, Rangeley Lake, and also Franklin Memorial Hospital, provided assistance in bringing college courses to RSU73. The FCCCN is a networked approach to higher education – an approach that is both affordable and accessible. With multiple sites offering classes and with a variety of course offerings, accessing higher education opportunities for Franklin County residents is now a reality. Since the fall of 2005, The FCCCN has been offering college classes and providing a pathway to the future, promoting higher educational opportunities to residents of Greater Franklin County.

Mrs. Fenlason, SMMS Band Director, and Mrs. Kilbreth, School Nurse, have been discussing an article published in the International Trumpet Guild. The article, A Look at the Role of Musical Wind Instruments on Asthma Therapy by Amanda Pepping, reports on studies that show how students with asthma may benefit from the respiratory exercise required to sing and play a wind instrument. According to the article “Playing a wind instrument maximizes vital lung capacity…it is therefore an ideal form of therapy for asthmatics.” Also “similar studies indicate that a main contributing factor to improved wellness is gained from controlled breathing.” So Mrs. Fenlason and Mrs. Kilbreth are joining forces to encourage all students to participate in the school music programs. MUSIC, IT’S GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH!
